environment sometimes with all of the discriminatory language we hear in some context against muslims. i would say if americans generally are one and what can we do to facilitate more of this critical discourse, part of it is in combating discrimination against muslims to create the space in which people can express themselves. there is some wonderful work being done. i was just in houston and i met -- they came early on a saturday morning to see me. this is their level of commitment. we were meeting at 8 a.m. on a saturday morning. some people in the pakistani community had founded the alliance for tolerance and compassion and they were bringing pakistanis who are shiites and sunnis together to counter secularism, counter violence in their countries and to try to build a coalition around this opposition view of extremism and violence. i think these little efforts that are beginning to crystallize are so important, even though much more can be done. authenticity, i think now in our minds in this area we have a certain idea of what it means to be a muslim, whether positive start or a nega
